What is road tax and why do we pay road tax?
Almost every car owner has to pay it, road tax. The RDW road tax is a tax for owning a car or motorcycle. It does not matter how many kilometers you drive. How much road tax you have to pay depends on several factors. In this article, we will go deeper into the road tax and road tax rates.
When to pay road tax?
When you buy a car, you are faced with a number of fixed costs. In addition to the mandatory car insurance, you also pay road tax. The road tax starts at the moment you buy a car. There are a number of exceptions, however, but you will read more about this later in this article.
Road tax rates
You pay road tax for driving a car on the road. You pay off road taxes for a car, delivery van, motorcycle or truck. In some cases, a road tax on trailers also applies. The amount of the road tax rates depends, among other things, on the weight of the car, the type of fuel and the place of residence (province) of the license holder.
How much road tax you have to pay is therefore dependent on a number of factors. On the website of the tax authorities, you will find a handy calculation tool with which you can calculate the road tax rates. So you immediately see how much money you have to pay per quarter or per year, for example, if you are going to buy another car.
Paying road taxes in installments
The road tax is determined every three months. The license holder can opt for an annual payment or a payment per quarter. The start of the period depends on the issue date of the registration certificate. For new cars, the period starts at the moment that the registration certificate is put in the name.
RDW road tax – Sell car
When the car is sold or scrapped, you no longer have to pay road tax. To prove this, you do need a warranty certificate. The Rijksdienst voor Het Wegverkeer (RDW) knows, thanks to this guarantee certificate, that the car is no longer in your name. In the case of the private sale, the transfer of a car takes place at the post office. It is possible that you have suspended your car for a certain period of time. If your car is suspended, you can not use it anymore. You do not have to pay road tax when you suspend.
Road Tax – Exemption
No road tax has to be paid for some motor vehicles. This applies, for example, to vintage cars older than 40 years. For vintage cars that were between 26 and 40 years old on 1 January 2016 and do not run on petrol, there is a transitional arrangement. They can qualify for a quarterly rate. The condition is that in January, February, and December the oldtimer cannot be driven on public roads.
